A Thousand Pieces

One of our friends had a car, so we packed everything and off we went.  As we were driving, we spotted my boyfriend’s friends walking down the street.  We stopped and they got into the car.  And there he was!  I remember everything about the first time I saw him: he was blond and muscular with beautiful warm green eyes.  I was at the back of the car and he sat in the passenger seat.  He turned around and introduced himself as John.  Boom!  My heart skipped a beat…

When my mom came home after eight hours of hard work, she found the note I had left on the kitchen table: GONE CAMPING.  BE BACK SUNDAY NIGHT.  That was all I wrote.  I thought it was enough.

With a young daughter of my own now, I know that it must have been so hard for my mom to contain me.  I was a free spirit, always looking for something to do.  When she found my note, she panicked and asked her friend to look for me.  They drove around the lake for hours.  I had an idea I was in trouble, but I didn’t care.

After we had our children and they were in their teen years, we used to joke that it was amazing how great they turned out.  We never shared with them how wild we were when we were younger.  We didn’t want to spoil that family peace; we were so lucky.
